WRITING TIPS

 

PREPARATION:

Good writing is clear thinking on paper. it has its foundation in thinking, planning organization. Before you start writing you should consider your aims, your readers and plan to organize your writing.

AIMS:

If there are several aims you should sort them into priority order. In order to establish your aims you may find that need to clarify matters. This may involve discussing the task with the partner of other lawyer supervising your work, your client, or others, such as regulatory bodies.

 WHO  ARE YOUR READERS?

The better you your reader, the better your chances of communicating clearly.

WHO ARE MY READERS?

Can i expect them to understand technical or socialized terms?Are they lawyers and if so are they specialists in the relevant field?Are they seniors or juniors? Is English their first language?

WHAT WILL THEY NEED TO KNOW?

What do they know about the subject? What information do i need ti give them?

WHAT ACTION IS REQUIRED?

What steps have to be taken? What do u want my readers to do?

HOW IS MY WRITING TO INFLUENCE THINKING OR BEHAVIOR?

What interests are motivates them? Are there other argument or points of view that need to be addressed? What would persuade them to my view?

PLANING  BEFORE WRITING:

Why plan? Planning and organization are the key to effective writing.It should help focus and organize that not obstruct or inhibit your thinking and writing.A plan is perfectly capable of being dynamic. It is not necessary to stick rigidly to your original  plan and you are free to  modify it as you investigate and research you supporting materials.

THE ORDER OF YOUR MATERIAL:

Your decision as to the most suitable order is important. 

a) chronological order: Most popular with lawyers, particularly litigators.

b)  categorical order is popular with commercial lawyers.

c) lawyers often use ascending order of complexity to assist prior understanding of straight forward issues to their clients.

LAYOUT:

The appearance of your writing can contribute significantly to the enthusiasm of your readers. Layout can aid readability, sensible and consistent layout device can help. Layout can provide a guide to meaning; if used well, layout can provide a guide to meaning.

SENTENCE AND PARAGRAPHS:

The basic rule in the construction of the sentence or paragraph is that there should be unity of taught and clarity of expression. Two are more disconnection ideas require separate sentence or paragraphs.

SENTENCES:

The long sentences is the hall marks of the lawyers. The main problem is that we have a tendency to express all foreseeable events in one mammoth sentences. to our accustomed eyes there seems nothing wrong with these epics but, to others, there long sentences make legal writing hard to understand.whoever the reader may be, the more words you put in a sentence the harder it is to understand. To sustain a lengthy sentence you grammar will usually have to be complex and unfamiliar The average reader may feel lost halfway through and forget how the sentence started. Mot readers will have to read it at least twice to find the meaning. 

KEEP SENTENCES SHORT:

its is generally recognized that the single most effective way to aid understanding is to use short sentence. Keeping sentence length short will help to avoid punctuation and grammar faults. There can be no hard and fast rules with sentence length but as a general guideline  you should aim at an average   25 words or less.

HOW TO SHORTEN SENTENCES:

The best technique for keeping your sentence short form of outset,is to make only one main point in each sentence. try to avoid non-essential qualifications to the main point in the same sentence . 

a) select a paragraph and measure the sentence length.

b) You should always try to edit sentences with over 40 words.

c) Cut any word or phrases that add little and support of your main point in the sentence.

d) Delete all redundant words and phrases.

e) Do all or any of these if its lead to greater clarity to your sentence.

d) Tabulated sentence is the answer, for long sentences which has no altematives.

VARY SENTENCE LENGTH:

Writing in uniform short sentences may  lack rhythm ad flow, sound abrupt and monotonous and annoy or bore the reader. Good writing has a natural sounding rhythm that rises and falls.

PARAGRAPHS:

A group  of  a series sentences connected with the development of same single idea or dealing with same single subject , or.A single sentence that along conveys the idea or deals with subject is called paragraph. Never attempt to explain more than 1 theme per paragraph. Properly used paragraph will add comprehension by separating
